Protect Your Eyes with Routine Eye Exams

One of the main reasons we recommend regular eye exams is to protect your eyes from common eye diseases. Many eye diseases progress with no early warning signs but are the leading causes of blindness in the United States.

While age puts you at greater risk of developing an eye disease, anyone at any age can develop one. Our primary goal is to protect and preserve your vision, so we include disease testing during every eye exam at Total Vision Solana Beach. While an eye disease diagnosis can be scary and life-changing, we’re here to support you in every way we can.

Please call us soon to book an eye care appointment and start your journey towards protecting your eye health.

Common eye diseases

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve. There are several types of glaucoma, most of which are characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), but others can occur even when IOP is normal.

Most types of glaucoma advance with no early symptoms and can cause irreversible vision loss and potential blindness. Glaucoma treatments range from eye drops to surgery designed to control your IOP. In some cases, you may require a combination of treatment methods.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that occurs when the macula—the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision—breaks down over time, leading to central vision loss. AMD progresses slowly, with very few early symptoms, and generally affects those over 50.

Early AMD doesn’t require treatment, but your optometrist will monitor your condition and suggest treatment options if your condition worsens. Advanced AMD can be treated with anti-VEGF drugs and photodynamic therapy (PDT) to prevent blindness.

Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s crystalline lens. They’re primarily caused by natural changes in the lens that occur with age, but other factors, such as injury or health conditions like diabetes, can also cause cataracts.

Cataracts generally progress slowly, and early cataracts can be managed with an update to your prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, as cataracts worsen, they can affect your quality of life and may need to be removed. Cataract surgery is common, safe, and effective.
